Shaping the Future of the Northern Rockies Economy
Why an Economic Diversification Strategy?
While long-standing reliance on natural gas and forestry has delivered benefits to the community, market disruptions and infrastructure limitations have exposed structural vulnerabilities. The Strategy does not represent a retreat from the NRRM’s core resource industries.
Instead, it identifies opportunities in the short- and medium-term to:
a) Diversify the local economy
b) Improve economic resilience
c) Address constraints to resource development
How the Strategy was developed
Evidence-based analysis of population, labour force, and key industries.
Targeted engagement, including:
• Interviews
• Industry workshops (x4)
• Chamber luncheon
• Council workshops (x2)
Iterative refinement with administration to ensure feasibility and alignment with long-term objectives.
What was developed? A Strategic framework
Position the NRRM as a strategic northern gateway – building economic resilience that revitalizes industry and the community.
- Expand local food production.
- Increase tourism to the NRRM’s natural assets.
- Position the NRRM as a northern logistics hub.
- Expand local influence over transportation infrastructure.
- Strengthen readiness and partnerships.
Now what?
Following a comprehensive review of the strategy’s action items, several initiatives have been identified to be advanced within the remainder of 2026 using existing operational capacity and approved budgets. Prioritization reflects consideration of current workloads, work already underway or ready to commence, and available resources. Implementation will continue to take place in phases, with additional actions advancing as capacity and funding allows. The NRRM will continue to work with regional partners, businesses, and organizations to support economic growth and resilience.
